Waiting for a Successor!!

Posted in Football, Lionel Messi, Spanish La Liga, Uncategorized by clash on April 20, 2007

Maradona, Pele, Platini, Cryuff, Zidane and so on. Every footballing nation on earth had a hero and everytime an upcoming player does some trick they are compared to these predecessors. But, how many of them lived up to these expectations? Not many.  Some players do make a mark and fade away – this was the case with Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Romario. The new generation players carve their own niche in the footballing world and fade away. Some are reffered to be the best of their times, but i dont think anyone lived up to the expectations of these bygone era’s heros. For pele, there came many – Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Romario, Ronaldinho but nobody dared to equate these players to the outstanding talent of Pele.  For Maradona, there never came a successor who carried that charm and charisma on ground. But now it looks like there is a player who can really match up to him. He proved this with a goal which looked like a carbon copy attempt of the 1986 spectacle by Maradona – Lionel Messi.  Over exaggeration may be th word to describe this attempt of mine to compare him with Maradona. Some how the stature, they darting runs with long strides and the control on ball makes him very much look like “the perfect successor” for Maradona.  Maradona himself vouches that Lionel Messi is his successor. I know this is kind of perplexing as Maradona would have made so many contradictory statments that it is very hard to believe him but by reading his book El Diego – what i could make out is that – he is man who doesnt hold this virtue called humility when it comes to football – he thinks “he is the best” and if he has to pass a comment on Messi as his sucessor, there ought to be something in Messi.

Lionel Messi did prove it by scoring a goal which exactly looked like the one Maradona scored in 1986 world cup. This was against Getafe on April 18th. Catch up with a video which draws comparison of both these goals.

Some more to digest from here, here and here.

Beauty of latin american ingenuity? Or the beauty of european field mathematics? Or the beauty of a perfect mix of both? Beauty it is, no matter what!
