ethical dilemma

Posted in Coco-Cola, Gurgaon, Monthly Review, The Hindu by clash on July 30, 2005

Thank god its friday :)-
This week(its over for me) was pretty much taxing, mentally and physically.

physically: i had a report to be submitted, it gave me physical stress coz the age old method of copying from another report still works! no mental stress at all.

mentally: watched the brutual marauding of HONDA workers in gurgaon on T.V. Read P.Sainath’s article on this in THE HINDU.Thank goodness, i have a friend in Rohan, who msg’s me all the way from Kerala to tell me how good the article is and it was worth reading. Its a humungous help for a person who is stuck in a land where News papers are adorned with skimply clad nymphet’s pic on the very first page.
I was pushed in to an ethical dilemma after i saw those clipings on T.V and read Sainath.i know its an unwanted dilemma, but im a retrograde person, i cant change my ideas and ideologies according to time and situation.I very well know that it can be very dangerous, but i cant help it. questions like, am i born to be part of these marauding corporates who teaches us to “see the rich and forgo the poor” did create lots of confusion in me.I know very well that i will be a part of these kind of conglomerates in 2 years time, “bread” thats what prompt me to do it.ideological rhetorics do not earn you bread! it vanishes in thin air, some take it,some scorn it off.

when my professor tells “look, walmart : they are the gods of business, thats the way to do business”. it flickers in the back of my mind, the article i read in MONTHLY REVIEW, that they mostly employ women in their stores and they are menially paid, yeah thats they way to do business!! when im offered a (if) job by COCO-COLA india ltd i know that i cannot forgo it, when i lucidly know that this firms suck almost all the ground water in plachimada and when agitations started against them, they scorned “its very bad that these kind of agitations are there, this will tranish the image of kerala as a new investment zone”!! this week really stressed me mentally… but the glorious thoughts of bread holds me back!!

“The streets of Gurgaon gave us a glimpse of something larger than a single protest. Bigger than a portrait of the Haryana police. Greater than Honda. Far more complex than the “image of India” as an investment destination. It presented us a microcosm of the new and old Indias. Of private cities and gated communities. Of different realities for different classes of society. Of ever-growing inequality. Of the malls of the few and the chawls of the many”- P.Sainath.

Ofcourse dear BREAD is the problem but the real delema lies in the fact that what will you do when you have earned more than for bread what will u do with it ? You can help it out if u have the money… We can be an enterpenor and make sure we keep the principles we live for….and dream about…NO PAINS NO GAINS…so first the pain of doing things we don’t want to do and then THE GAIN of doing the things which is RIGHT for US
    Check out the old
its more meaning ful now…i’ve changed it

neat and well written! but then the “bread” can be earned by doing something you like too…! yeah then, when you think of it, many don’t have the choice!

    What compromise?
Working at coca-cola doesnt make you one of em. the same way staying hungry doesnt put you against them.
Cheers to all socialists in corporates 🙂

Buddy, ideologies alone don’t feed anyone. I don’t need to tell you about those true Communists of Kerala who got axed by their own party for not being able to adjust to ‘the changing times’, do I?
Instead, mould your ideologies rationally and like “dhanyam” said, be an entrepreneur, and you are always free to hold yourself and your ideologies up then. Speaking in its true sense, I really don’t think anyone is more qualified to be called ‘a true communist’ than Narayana Murthy, the Infosys Chairman, in the present times.
